Fun Things To Do with Your Children in Khao Lak

Located in the north of Phuket, Khao Lak is one of the best places to visit if you want to take a break from the fast-paced life in the city with your kids. Aside from its beautiful beaches, the coastal town has a family-friendly environment that makes it a tremendous kid-friendly vacation spot in Thailand.

Seemingly the most obvious activity in Khao Lak is to enjoy the beach, and with kids in tow, you can build sandcastles, go for a swim, and explore marine life. Nang Thong Beach is a great spot in town for a day at the beach with your children.

Elephants by the beach? That’s something you don’t get to see every day. Take your family to the former elephant trekking spot to see the elephants. But you won’t get to ride them, though — the elephants are retired and the spot is now a place to learn and see elephants up close. You and your kids will know more about the importance of elephant conservation and in the end, you get to feed these giant gray and gentle animals. What makes it more exciting is that you get the chance to swim with them and give the elephants a scrub!

Your children are definitely up for some adventure and Khao Lak will not disappoint. Hop on a bamboo raft and navigate the Khao Lak river. And while you float on the raft, your gondoliers will point out wildlife in the rainforest.

There are two turtle sanctuaries in town but the closes will be at the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Fleet. Visit the sanctuary and see approximately 1,8000 turtles of different sizes; most are hatchlings that are kept until grown to size until they can freely roam the ocean on their own. If you’re lucky, you might catch the Turtle Festival in Khao Lak where you can release the hatchlings to the sea. The Turtle Festival is from March 1 - 10.

Take your kids to the Similan Islands to see the breathtaking coral reefs and turtles. If your children are old enough for more sea exploration, take them snorkeling with you. Need diving lessons for kids? Children as young as ten can learn how to dive.

Khao Lak has one of the richest mangrove forests in Thailand, and it is known as Little Amazon. You and your children can kayak in the Little Amazon. If your kids are not up for some kayaking, you can go on a guided walking tour instead of the magnificent rainforest of Si Phang-Nga National Park, plus get a chance to visit Tam Nang Waterfall as well.
